Anglican Bishop urges FG, states to provide teachers with housing, car loans

An appeal has gone to the Federal and State governments to provide more robust welfare packages for teachers.

The appeal was made by Rt Rev Isaac Oluyamo, the Diocesan Bishop of Ijesa North Anglican Diocese in a statement he personally signed at the end of a special programme organised by the Diocese for teachers in Ijebu-Jesa, Osun State.

Bishop Oluyamo also suggested that the welfare package could come in the form of car and housing loans for the teachers.

The cleric also advocated for special allowances to be given to teachers in appreciation of the vital role they play in shaping the minds of future leaders.

The statement reads, “Government at all levels should create schemes to ensure better working and living conditions for teachers.

“These schemes should include the provision of loans to purchase cars and build houses. Special allowances should also be given to them, and their promotions should come as and when due.

“Teachers play a major role in shaping the lives of the younger generation, molding them into ideal minds that will provide the right leadership.

“Teachers must have stable minds to perform their duties effectively.

“Whatever will enable them to discharge their duties, the government must provide, as the wellbeing of the people remains a primary responsibility of government at all levels.”

Oluyamo, while urging the teachers to be dutiful and committed to their duties, noted that anyone in the teaching profession must do the job with the fear of God.

“I challenge you to continue serving humanity through your profession by providing the best training for Nigeria’s future leaders,” the statement concluded.
