Russia’s Mirra Andreeva defeated Clara Tauson 7-6 (7-1) to become the youngest player to win a WTA 1000 title at the Dubai Tennis Championships on Sunday.

The 17-year-old continued capped off her impressive showing in the tournament with a historic title after beating the likes of Marketa Vondrousova, Iga Swiatek, and Elena Rybakina on her way to the final.

Tauson raced to a 2-0 lead before Andreeva recovered to make it 2-2 before holding on to win the title.

At just 17 years and 299 days old, she is now the youngest-ever winner of a WTA 1000 event, and became the first teenager to move into the top 10 of the world rankings since Nicole Vaidisova achieved the feat in 2007.

She joins Maria Sharapova, Michaella Krajicek, Nicole Vaidisova, and Coco Gauff as only the fifth player to win multiple WTA titles before turning 18.

Andreeva was delighted to make history despite fighting off nervousness to win the title.

She said: “I’m just super happy with the way I was playing. I was nervous. I think you could see it during the match with all those double faults, some mistakes.

“So I’m just really happy that I could manage and deal with the pressure. And now it just feels amazing.

“This is something I dreamt of and now my dream came true so I’m just, I’m speechless right now.”

Andreeva has been rewarded with a massive $597,000, while runner-up Clara Tauson earned $351,801. Semi-finalists Karolina Muchova, and Elena Rybakina were awarded $181,400 each for their impressive runs.

She achieved her best major result at the 2024 French Open by reaching the semifinals at the age of 17.

In January 2023, Andreeva reached the final of the girls’ singles at the Australian Open, eventually losing to doubles partner Alina Korneeva, in three sets.
