Anambra To Set Up Electricity Regulatory Commission Amid Power Crisis
The Anambra State Executive Council (ANSEC) has announced plans to establish the Anambra State Electricity Regulatory Commission (ASERC).
This came at the 10th ANSEC meeting held on June 2.
The planned commission aligns with the newly signed Anambra State Electricity Law, the state’s information commissioner, Law Mefor, said in a statement on Tuesday.
The move comes amid worsening power supply across the state, where communities and critical sectors like health and small businesses suffer periodic blackouts.
THE WHISTLER reported in April 2025 that Anambra residents questioned the effectiveness of Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC), which is responsible for power distribution in the region.
Despite frequent complaints from disgruntled residents, electricity remains unreliable in major towns like Awka, Onitsha, and Nnewi.
In several areas, residents report receiving bills for power never supplied, with transformers damaged or non-functional for months.
Consequently, the Anambra government said the commission would be tasked with regulating power distribution within Anambra and ensuring accountability from service providers.
The ANSEC has also launched a recruitment drive for experts to join the commission.
The council said the decision marks a key step toward reclaiming control over the electricity supply situation.
Other decisions reached at the meeting include the renaming of the government House to ‘Light House Awka’ which, according to the statement reflects the state’s slogan, “Light of the Nation.”
Also, the ANSEC discussed the “Anambra Rebirth” initiative aimed at restoring the state’s moral and social values.
The council said it intends to make the programme a defining legacy of the current administration.
On the issue of child begging rings in the state, the ANSEC resolved that buildings used as holding centres for child beggars will be sealed and confiscated in line with the Anambra Homeland Security Law 2025.
The decision, according to the government, targets the exploitation of children in street begging rings across the state.
The statement also revealed the various projects earmarked for short-term completion and the cost of their execution.
The government approved the sum of N190.48m for a Factory Warehouse for Kaolin Processing.
The warehouse, located in Ukpor Kaolin Plant, was contracted to Strata Projects Limited with an eight-week completion timeline.
Another project is the extension of the Nnewi Industrial Power Line & Transformer Installation also located in the Ukpor Kaolin Plant.
The contractor for the project is Zamic Ventures Limited, at an N110.11m cost for execution, within a six-week completion timeline.
Finally, the state government approved the supply of Uniforms and Gear to the Ocha Brigade.
The government contracted the project to Analiro Enterprises Limited at the cost of N155.65m.
