The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Anambra State Command, have arrested two suspected members of a tricycle-snatching syndicate terrorising operators and passengers in Awka.
The Anambra NSCDC commandant, Olatunde Maku, confirmed the arrests on Wednesday at the command’s headquarters, where he revealed that the suspects were caught red-handed on Tuesday after allegedly snatching a tricycle at Araba Umuzocha, Awka.
“At about 9 am on Tuesday, acting on a tip-off, operatives of the command intercepted a three-man gang operating along Araba Umuzocha and its environs.
“Nemesis caught up with them after they forcefully snatched a tricycle, popularly known as Keke NAPEP, from a victim near Regina Junction by Zik’s Avenue, Awka. Two of the suspects were arrested, while one managed to escape and is currently at large,” Maku disclosed.
The arrested suspects were identified as 24-year-old Obum Charles of Umueze Road, Amudo Village, and 27-year-old Chukwunonso Ekeh of Onueyiagu Street, Amachala, Awka.
The NSCDC stated that efforts are underway to apprehend their fleeing accomplice.
Maku noted that preliminary investigations revealed that the gang specialised in hijacking tricycles and robbing both riders and passengers of their belongings.
“Preliminary findings indicate that the gang specialises in snatching tricycles while robbing riders and passengers of their valuables,” he added.
He assured the public that the suspects would be prosecuted upon completion of the investigation.
While commending his men for their prompt response, Maku reaffirmed the NSCDC’s dedication to crime-fighting and to ensure the safety of lives and property in Anambra State.
