Anambra Guber: INEC Announces Dates for Primaries
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that political parties will commence the conduct of primaries for the 2025 Anambra State governorship election from March 20, 2025, to April 10, 2025.
INEC stated this on Thursday following its regular weekly meeting.
Sam Olumekun, INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, recalled that the commission had earlier published the Notice of Election on November 13, 2024, in line with Section 28(1) of the Electoral Act 2022.
The off-cycle governorship election in Anambra is scheduled to be held on Saturday, November 8, 2025.
Olumekun disclosed that 12 out of the 19 registered political parties have submitted the schedules of their primaries, as agreed during the Commission’s consultative meeting with political parties in January.
He urged the remaining seven parties yet to comply to submit their schedules to enable INEC effectively monitor the process, as stipulated in Section 84 of the Electoral Act 2022.
INEC also cautioned political parties against abrupt changes in the dates, venues, and modes of their primaries, noting that such last-minute alterations disrupt the workflow of the Commission’s monitoring staff and inflate election monitoring costs.
Meanwhile, Dr. Queen Agwu, the INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Anambra State, on Wednesday assured that the commission is fully prepared for the governorship election.
Speaking in Awka during an interactive session with journalists on Wednesday, Agwu stressed INEC’s commitment to ensuring a transparent and credible electoral process.
In addition to the governorship poll, INEC will conduct two bye-elections in Anambra State.
They include the election to fill the vacant Anambra South Senatorial seat following the death of Senator Ifeanyi Ubah and another to replace the late Justice Azuka, a member of the State House of Assembly representing Onitsha North Constituency, who was kidnapped and later killed.
Agwu urged political parties to commence mobilisation and sensitisation of their members while ensuring adherence to electoral rules.
She assured stakeholders that the Federal Government would provide the necessary funds for the elections and reaffirmed INEC’s dedication to an improved electoral process, including voter register updates and enhanced security measures.
She also commended the media for its objective and balanced reporting, which she said has helped maintain peace and transparency in electoral activities within the state.
According to her, INEC has been engaging stakeholders, improving technological systems, and preparing the logistical framework for the elections.
