Anambra Decides: INEC Registers 96,000 New Voters, Extends CVR

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has registered 96,085 new voters in Anambra State within nine days.

The INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun, disclosed this on Thursday.

Olumekun, during the commission’s weekly meeting, also announced a three-day extension of the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise.

“The commission is pleased with the turnout of registrants in Anambra and the peaceful conduct of the Continuous Voters Registration (CVR) in all the 326 registration centres in the state,” Olumekun stated.

According to INEC, 56,017 of the new registrants (about 58 per cent) were women, while 50,429 were youths between the ages of 18 and 34, making up 48 per cent of the new voters.

On average, the commission has processed over 10,600 registrations per day since the exercise began.

In addition to new registrations, INEC said it recorded 12,595 requests for voter transfer, both within and outside Anambra.

The commission said it also received 7,061 requests for updates or replacement of damaged or lost Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).

“The CVR in Anambra ends today. However, in response to appeals from citizens, the commission hereby extends the exercise for three more days. It will now end on Sunday, July 20,” Olumekun announced.

After the CVR, the commission stated plans to display the preliminary voter register for claims and objections as required by law.

The step would be followed by automated biometric cleanup using the ABIS (Automated Biometric Identification System) to eliminate duplicate or fraudulent entries.

The INEC also revealed that it had received five more applications from associations seeking registration as political parties, bringing the total number to 134.

“The details of the new associations, including their proposed names, acronyms, logos, addresses, and interim leadership, have been published on the INEC website and other platforms for public information,” Olumekun said.

The commission assured Nigerians of its continued transparency and regular updates on all electoral processes ahead of the 2025 off-cycle and 2027 general elections.
