The Agege Local Government Area of Lagos State has commenced the construction of a modern market complex named after Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola, the acclaimed winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election.

The new MKO Abiola Market, flagged off on Monday, is designed to uplift commercial activities, support small businesses, and empower traders within the Agege community.

At the groundbreaking ceremony, the council’s Executive Chairman, Alhaji Ganiyu Egunjobi, described the project as a game-changer for local enterprise and urban renewal.

“This market is not just bricks and mortar; it is a platform for opportunities.

“Opportunities for hundreds of traders and artisans to have access to modern stalls and facilities, while thousands of shoppers will benefit from the improved business ecosystem it will create,” Egunjobi stated.

The project is being developed through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) with Urban Shelter and Truworth Ventures, ensuring sustainable development and quality infrastructure for local traders.

Beyond economic growth, Egunjobi emphasised that the market also serves to commemorate MKO Abiola’s enduring legacy.

“Named in honour of the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola, this market will not only stimulate local commerce, it will also immortalise a legacy that represents justice, equity, and economic empowerment,” he said.

With just weeks left in his tenure, Egunjobi expressed confidence that the project would have long-term benefits—ranging from job creation during the construction phase to lasting improvements in the ease of doing business in Agege.

“It will create employment opportunities all through and grow the economy of our dear community,” he added.
