Afreximbank Appoints George Elombi as New President

Afreximbank has officially confirmed George Elombi as its new President and Chairman of the Board, signalling a new chapter for the institution as it seeks to broaden its mandate and deepen regional impact.

Elombi, a Cameroonian with nearly 30 years at the bank, will succeed Benedict Oramah in September. His appointment was approved at the 32nd Annual General Meeting in Abuja after a rigorous international recruitment process.

This makes him the fourth president of the bank since its establishment in 1993. His selection reflects the board’s desire for leadership continuity during a period of bold institutional ambition.

“I have worked alongside remarkable colleagues and extraordinary leaders to help shape this institution’s vision, its mandate as well as its growth… I will work to preserve this important asset,” Elombi said in his acceptance speech.

Since joining in 1996 as a legal officer, Elombi has held several high-ranking positions, most recently Executive Vice President for Governance, Legal and Corporate Services. He has been instrumental in setting up key subsidiaries like FEDA and AfrexInsure, and played a major role in the bank’s COVID-19 response, overseeing vaccine procurement and equity mobilisation.

He led efforts that secured $3.6 billion in equity by April 2025 and is expected to steer the bank toward becoming a $250 billion institution in the next decade—a goal championed by Oramah.

Elombi holds a Ph.D. in commercial arbitration and a Master of Laws from the London School of Economics, and previously lectured at the University of Hull.

His appointment comes at a pivotal time as Afreximbank seeks to reinforce its leadership in African industrialisation, trade integration, and implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
