The new Commissioner of Police (CP) for Oyo State, Johnson Adenola

With just a year to the mandatory retirement age of 60 years, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Agbetokun, has appointed Johnson Adenola as the new Commissioner of Police (CP) for Oyo State.

Born on May 6, 1966, Adenola officially assumed office on Thursday at the Command Headquarters in Eleyele, Ibadan, pledging to curb crime in the state.

A graduate of Ogun State University with a Bachelor of Arts (Hons.), Adenola joined the police force in 1992 as a Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) and has served for 33 years.

At his inaugural media briefing, Adenola acknowledged the security challenges facing residents, including kidnapping, illegal mining, and land grabbing.

“I am fully prepared to tackle the tasks ahead. These challenges include kidnapping, armed robbery, herders/farmers clashes, illegal mining, chieftaincy disputes, land grabbing, and cult-related violence.

“We will work tirelessly to drastically reduce crime rates in the state, in line with the directives of the Inspector-General (IG) of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, ensuring that residents live without fear and their safety and security are guaranteed.

“Adenola, who began his career at the Owerri Divisional Headquarters in Imo State, emphasised that the command would proactively identify, isolate, and prosecute those threatening Oyo’s peace.

“I am committed to building upon this legacy.”

Before his appointment, Adenola served in various capacities, including as Team Leader of the Surveillance Section at the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Yaba, Lagos, from 1999 to 2002.

He later became the Officer-in-Charge of the ‘X’ Squad at the Lagos State Police Command Headquarters, Ikeja, from 2014 to 2015.

He was posted to the Criminal Intelligence & Investigation Department in Lokoja, Kogi State, where he served as Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of CID from June 2017 to May 2019.

From there, he moved to the Force Headquarters in Abuja as Assistant Commissioner in Charge of Discipline from May 2019 to January 2020.

Between January 2020 and August 2021, Adenola was Deputy Force Secretary at the Nigeria Police Force Headquarters before becoming Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Operations at the Delta State Command from August 2021 to November 2023.

He further assured residents that the police under his leadership would adopt a zero-tolerance approach to criminal activities and called for public cooperation to enhance security efforts.
