Adamawa: 17 Farmers, Others Killed In Two Weeks — LG Chairman

The Chairman of Hong Local Government Area (LGA) in Adamawa State, Usman Wa’anganda, on Monday, confirmed that 17 people had been killed in his council over the past two weeks.

Speaking to a group of journalists in Yola, Wa’anganda said that the latest incident occurred on Saturday, April 26, 2025, around 4:00 pm, when ten hunters and members of the “Civilian Joint Task Force” were killed. He identified the assailants as “Boko Haram insurgents” residing in Kopre village.

Wa’anganda explained that the insurgents stormed the border community on motorcycles, overpowering local defenders with superior firepower.

He confirmed that the attack left many houses burnt and worsened the fears among residents who have long been living under the threat of repeated assaults.

He revealed, “You know Kopre is one of the villages that shares a border with Sambisa forest, so Boko Haram frequently enters and attacks.

“We only have hunters there. There are no soldiers or any security presence. Even when we call them, they don’t come.

“The security situation here is disappointing. I advise the government to send a battalion here so that our people can return to their homes and farms,” he appealed.

Following the death toll announced by the Hong Local Government Chairman, THE WHISTLER contacted the Adamawa State Police Public Relations Officer, Suleiman Nguroje, to verify the number of casualties.

As of press time, Nguroje had not responded to calls to confirm the reported deaths.

In response to the violence, the Adamawa State Police Command had deployed additional security personnel to Kwapre, a community near the attacked village, after the assault by gunmen believed by locals to be Boko Haram terrorists.

According to Nguroje, the Adamawa State Commissioner of Police, Dankombo Morris, instructed the officers to display skill, professionalism, and promptness as part of strategies to prevent further violent crimes.

The statement reads, “The police boss demonstrates the effectiveness of intelligence-led policing and the dedication of the officers deployed in combating crime across the border.

“The command urges the public to continue cooperating with law enforcement agencies by providing timely information that can aid in preventing crime and ensuring public safety.”

Kopre, the village at the centre of the latest attack, is the hometown of the immediate past Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha.

Soldiers had previously been stationed in Garaha, a nearby town, during Mustapha’s tenure, but they were relocated after he left office.
