Abia Traditional Ruler Advises Nigerians To Prioritize Agriculture As Solution To Economic Crisis

Nigerians have been advised to embrace agriculture as a sustainable solution to the country’s current economic challenges, occasioned by the removal of fuel subsidy.

This call was made on Saturday by Chief Ikedichi Eluwa, the village head of Umuyota Autonomous Community, during the 2024 Traditional Iri-Ji (New Yam) Festival of Umuawa-Alaocha Autonomous Community in Umuahia North LGA.

Speaking at the festival, held at the community’s Market Square, Chief Eluwa described the event as a historic celebration, noting that it was the first of its kind. He stressed the importance of engaging in large-scale farming, particularly the cultivation of yam, which he referred to as the “king of all crops.” He expressed gratitude for another successful harvest and the blessings of life, urging Nigerians to return to agriculture as a reliable means of securing food supply amid rising hunger.

“We, the people of Eke, are farmers. We are not like those who go to the market to buy yam. As we celebrate the Yam Festival today, the yam we produce is for future generations. I advise them to continue farming. Nigerians are crying about hunger, but when you farm, you can produce yam. If you see my own yam, you’ll be convinced,” Chief Eluwa said.

Also speaking at the event, a prominent community figure, Chief (Captain) Agommuo Chukwunyere, called on Ndi-Igbo to preserve the Igbo tradition and culture of the New Yam Festival, warning that it should not be allowed to fade away. He highlighted the festival’s role in fostering unity and love within the community.

“My dad upholds our culture and tradition, and I support it 100percent. It’s something that gives me joy, and I wish to do everything financially possible to support it. This festival brings love, joy, and unites people from all walks of life,” Chief Chukwunyere stated.

The event, attended by a large number of community members, featured performances by various cultural dance groups, as well as award presentations, adding to the colorful celebration.

THE WHISTLER reports that the Iri-Ji festival provided an opportunity for the community to come together in celebration and to reflect on the importance of agriculture in the nation’s future.
