Abia To Get World-Class Golf Course In Umuahia

Umuahia, the capital of Abia State, is set to become the site of a world-class championship golf course as a network of Abia-born golfers from within Nigeria and the diaspora unite to launch a legacy project aimed at placing the state on the global map of golf tourism.
Operating under the umbrella of the Abia Classic Golf & Country Club, the forum is leveraging its wide membership base and technical expertise to push for the creation of a championship-standard golf and country club in the state capital.
A Technical Committee has already been established to drive the initiative, with renowned architect and Fellow of the Nigerian Institute of Architects, Arc. Benson Ezem, serving as Chairman and Anthony Ezenwoko as Secretary.
Speaking to THE WHISTLER on Wednesday, Ezem noted that the committee has been tasked “to develop a comprehensive proposal and investment package for presentation to the Governor of Abia State.”
He explained that the ultimate goal is “to facilitate the creation of a world-class golf and country club that meets international standards and contributes to the socio-economic development of the state.”
Ezem, who is also President of Cosmo Base Consortium Limited and chief promoter of the project, added that the inspiration for the Umuahia facility draws from existing models such as the Lakowe Lakes Golf and Country Estate in Lagos.
“We are looking at building a standard championship golf course in the mould of Lakowe Lakes Golf and Country Estate, blending traditional country estate style with modern amenities, functionality and hospitality services,” he said.
With a concept that mirrors the 308-hectare Lakowe Lakes estate, the Abia Classic Golf & Country Club envisions a golf destination that will serve both recreational and developmental purposes, creating jobs and drawing investments to the region.
Prominent figures backing the initiative include Senator Nkechi Nwaogu, a member of the forum’s board of trustees; Chief Emeka Wogu, Chairman of the South East Development Commission (SEDC); and Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, all known for their passion for golf and development in the South East.
Ezem confirmed that the group is “engaging with key stakeholders, including government officials, investors, and local communities to ensure that the proposed golf course aligns with best practices in golf course and country club development.”
He further noted that the timing of the project aligns with the developmental philosophy of the current Abia State Government under Governor Alex Otti.
“This forum was created to bring all Abia golfers together. It came at the right time, given the disposition of the present government to encourage inclusive participation in Abia’s development,”Ezem explained.
“The purpose is to foster unity and pursue a common goal in developing a modern golf course in the state capital, Umuahia,” he added.
To showcase its vision and generate public interest, the Abia Classic Golf & Country Club has scheduled its “Awareness Maiden Golf Super Kitty” for April 19, 2025. The event will be held at the Aba Sports Club Golf Course.
Governor Alex Otti is expected to grace the event as Special Guest of Honour and perform the ceremonial tee-off, further cementing the government’s alignment with the project.
“By achieving its set objectives, the forum can make a significant impact on golf development, tourism, and community engagement in Abia State,” said Ezem.
