Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has approved the constitution of the Board of the Abia State Medicines and Commodities Management Agency (ASMCMA), as part of efforts to reform healthcare delivery and improve access to essential medicines across public health institutions in the state.

According to a press release signed by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Ukoha Njoku Ukoha, on Thursday, the Board is composed of professionals drawn from various sectors of the health system, with a mandate to provide strategic oversight and policy direction for the Agency.

The Board is chaired by Chief Victor Amuta, a fellow of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (FPSN) and a public health expert with over 48 years of experience in healthcare management.

Other members include Dr. (Mrs.) Katlyn Ukpabi, representing Abia North Senatorial District; Sir Ucheoma A. Madumere, representing Abia Central; and Dr. Akara Emmanuel Ugochukwu, representing Abia South. Mr. Chris Ukah also joins the board as a development advocate and community health representative.

Statutory members from the Ministry of Health include Dr. Borke Ngozi Okwale, Director of Medical Services; Pharm. (Mrs.) Nnenna Emuche, Director of Pharmacy Services; and Mrs. Charity Ekwuribe, Director of Nursing Services.

Other institutional representatives on the Board are Dr. Clem Ifekeronye of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Sir Emmanuel Okafor of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN), and Mrs. Elechi Obi-Chianakwalam from the Ministry of Finance.

Pharm. Nnaemeka Orji will serve as the Executive Secretary of the Agency and Secretary to the Board.

“The State Government expresses confidence that the calibre and competence of the Board members will ensure that the Agency fulfills its mandate of building a reliable and transparent system for the procurement, distribution, and regulation of medicines and health commodities in Abia State,” the statement read.

THE WHISTLER reports that the establishment of the board is expected to strengthen the structure for medicine distribution in Abia, in line with the administration’s broader agenda to revamp critical sectors of governance.
