Abia-Born Professor, Uche Takes Over As COREN’s New Registrar

Professor of Structural Engineering at the Bayero University, Kano, Okorie Austine Uche

A Professor of Structural Engineering at the Bayero University, Kano, Okorie Austine Uche, on Friday, took over as the new Registrar of the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN).

His appointment, which takes effect this month was approved during COREN’s 183rd Ordinary Council Meeting held on January 15, 2025.

He took over from Professor Adisa Ademola Bello, whose tenure has successfully concluded.

A statement issued by the COREN’s
Head, of Corporate Advancement and Public Relations, Mrs Ojonugwa Haruna, in Abuja, said the new Registrar was born
on August 1, 1965, in Amuda-Isuochi, Umunneochi Local Government Area of Abia State.

The statement added that he began his educational journey at Development Primary School, Owerri, and continued through Isuochi Secondary School and Emmanuel College, Owerri, Imo State.

“He earned an HND Distinction in Agricultural Engineering from the Federal Polytechnic, Nekede, in 1988, graduating as valedictorian, and later obtained a B.Eng. in Civil Engineering from Bayero University, Kano, in 1994, where he was the best graduating student.

“He also holds an M.Sc. (2000) and Ph.D. (2008) in Civil Engineering from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria

“Prof. Uche, an esteemed engineer and academic, has had a distinguished career spanning more than three decades.

“Prior to his appointment, he served as a Professor of Civil/Structural Engineering at Bayero University, Kano. His contributions to engineering education, research, and administration in Nigeria have been significant.

“Since joining Bayero University in 2001, Prof. Uche has mentored over 1,000 undergraduate and 300 postgraduate students, leaving an indelible mark on Nigeria’s engineering sector.
“His academic work includes more than 90 publications in reputable journals and conferences.

“He is a Fellow of the Nigerian Institution of Civil Engineers (FNICE), a COREN-registered engineer, and a member of various prestigious engineering associations, including the American Concrete Institute (ACI) and the Materials Society of Nigeria”, he stated.
