Abia Assembly Passes 37 Bills In Two Years
The Abia State House of Assembly has announced a significant milestone in the state’s legislative history, with the passage of 37 bills into law within two years in office.
This was disclosed to journalists on Tuesday by the Speaker, Rt. Hon Emmanuel Emeruwa, during a media chat.
According to the Speaker, “We’ve passed 37 bills into law since 2023 and these are actual laws that are now existing in our state.
“These laws are designed to address various aspects of state governance, including electricity, senior citizens’ welfare, and local government autonomy.
Promoting Industrialization and Development
One of the notable laws passed is the Electricity Law, which allows the state to control electricity and promote industrialization.
The Speaker highlighted the potential benefits of this law, stating, “We are also almost getting out of the national electricity.
“People are welcome to come to Abia and establish their own electricity companies and power stations,” he said.
This move is expected to attract investments, create jobs, and stimulate economic growth.
Supporting Senior Citizens
The Senior Citizens’ Safety Fund Law is another significant piece of legislation aimed at providing support for senior citizens’ medical and other needs.
The Speaker emphasized the importance of caring for senior citizens, saying, “Senior citizens ought to be cared for in terms of helping them in medicine and other aspects of life.”
Challenges and Concerns
Despite the achievements, concerns were raised about the dominance of executive bills, law enforcement, and the oversight function of the House.
The Speaker assured that the House is committed to effective governance and development and that these concerns will be addressed.
