2027: PDP Working To Bring Jonathan, Obi Back, Says Abba Moro

A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and senator representing Benue South in the National Assembly, Abba Moro, says the opposition party is making fresh moves to persuade former President Goodluck Jonathan and ex-Anambra State governor Peter Obi to return ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Moro, who spoke on Channels Television’s Politics Today, disclosed that influential stakeholders within the PDP were already reaching out to the two politicians, who had both left the party under strained circumstances.

“So, in the run-up to 2027, I am aware certain individuals have been talking to Peter Obi, ‘Hey, come back home; this is what we are likely to do, and if you come, you stand a chance of being the candidate,” he said.

On Jonathan, he added that, “Some persons are talking to the former president to come and run. It is a possibility.”

Obi, who was Atiku Abubakar’s running mate in the 2019 elections, left the PDP in 2022 for the Labour Party, where he secured its presidential ticket and emerged as a major force in the 2023 contest.

Jonathan, since his defeat to Muhammadu Buhari in 2015, has largely kept a low profile and rarely attended PDP activities.

Moro also admitted that the PDP regretted fielding Atiku, who has since dumped the PDP, as its presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, which saw the All Progressives Congress (APC) and its candidate, Bola Tinubu, emerge victorious.

“As a result of how the election turned out, definitely, it [fielding Atiku] was an error. To lose a very monumental election in that disastrous manner is certainly in for regret,” he said.

With less than two years to the 2027 polls, the PDP, according to Moro, is now weighing its options as it looks to regain national prominence, with Obi and Jonathan appearing central to its possible strategy.
