2027: MURIC calls for Muslim governors in South West

The Muslim Rights Concern, MURIC, has called on political parties in the South West to field Muslim candidates for governorship elections in 2027.

The group made the call on Monday in a statement by its Executive Director, Professor Ishaq Akintola.

Akintola noted that all six states in the region have been governed by Christians in the past six years, creating what it described as a “religious imbalance.”

“Meanwhile, there has been religious imbalance in the administration of all the South Western states in the past six years as all of them brandish Christian governors to date.

“This has resulted in a wide disconnect between the state governments and the Muslim populace,” Akintola said.

He added that Muslims have been excluded “at both executive and administrative levels of governance,” a situation he argued undermines democracy by limiting participation and inclusion.

“We therefore advise political parties in the region to pick Muslims as their gubernatorial candidates. This will serve as a guarantee to secure Muslim votes in their gubernatorial elections,” he said.
