2027: Momodu Alleges APC Sponsoring Factions To Cripple Opposition

Publisher and politician, Dele Momodu, has accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of stifling the opposition by deliberately creating factions across political parties to frustrate efforts at building a formidable challenge before the 2027 general election.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Morning Brief on Friday, Momodu, a member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), said the ruling party is jittery and has adopted a strategy of destabilising opposition parties through sponsored divisions.

“It’s obvious that the ruling party is jittery. The ruling party does not want any strong competition in 2027 in particular,” he said.

“They are not too bothered by the governors and the rest of them. But they want a sole candidate, if possible. All political parties would rise up and endorse one man, and that is the President and Commander-in-Chief.”

Momodu linked his claim to recent developments in the ADC, where the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Thursday recognised a new national working committee led by former Senate President David Mark as chairman, with ex-Osun State governor Rauf Aregbesola as secretary.

The INEC decision has sparked internal debates, with some ADC members vowing to challenge the move in court. Among them is the party’s former presidential candidate, Dumebi Kachikwu, who openly faulted the development.

Momodu, however, said he was not surprised by Kachikwu’s reaction or the threat of litigation, stressing that the ADC leadership had anticipated such resistance.

“So I was not surprised yesterday when the news broke again that these guys are on their way to court. We all know what is going on,” he said.

“There’s nothing wrong with anybody going to court if you’re aggrieved. Well, fortunately, they should have known that the conveners of ADC worked extremely hard behind the scenes to arrive at where we are now.”

The Ovation International Magazine publisher insisted that the ADC leadership did not emerge by chance but through deliberate efforts to insulate the party from the ruling APC’s attempts at infiltration, similar to what he alleged has been done in other opposition parties.

“They took their time. They knew the government agents would attempt to thwart their efforts, like they have done in Labour, like they are doing in PDP, and they’re doing in NNPP — creating factions everywhere,” Momodu alleged.

The comments come as opposition parties continue to grapple with internal disputes, defections, and leadership tussles — developments critics say are weakening their chances of presenting a united front against the APC in the next election.
