The Nigerian Super Eagles claimed a narrow 1-0 victory over Rwanda in their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign, keeping their momentum alive as they prepare for a crucial clash against South Africa.
The match, played in Uyo, the capital of Akwa Ibom State, was tightly contested as Rwanda frustrated the Super Eagles for long spells with compact defending and quick counterattacks. Nigeria, however, showed resilience and finally found the breakthrough in the second half.
The decisive moment came early in the second half when substitute Tolu Arokodare capitalised on a defensive lapse, slotting home to give the Eagles the lead. Despite late pressure from Rwanda, the Nigerian backline, marshalled by Calvin Bassey and William Troost-Ekong, held firm to secure all three points.
Tolu Arokodare reacted to the Super Eagles’ 1-0 victory over Rwanda in Saturday’s Group C, 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier in Uyo on his X page shortly after the game.
“Three points! We keep pushing; the job’s not finished. #teatime,” Arokodare wrote on his X handle.
The Super Eagles now focus on a high-stakes encounter against Bafana Bafana of South Africa, a side also pushing hard for a World Cup ticket. The clash is expected to be a fiery contest, with group standings likely to hinge on the outcome.
