2026 WCQ: Bassey’s goal not legitimate – Ex-Bafana goalie, Khune

Former Bafana Bafana goalkeeper, Itumeleng Khune has claimed that Calvin Bassey’s goal for Nigeria should have been ruled out.

Super Eagles captain, William Troost-Ekong slotted the ball into his own net in the 25th minute to give South Africa the lead

Fulham defender, Bassey, equalised for Nigeria in the 45th minute from a header.

The ball, however, hit Bassey’s hand before going into the net.

Bafana Bafana players protested afterwards but the centre referee turned down their appeals.

A disappointed Khune said VAR would have cancelled the goal if it was used in the game.

“I don’t know how the referee missed that, he was in a good position to see. If he didn’t see it, his linesman could’ve seen it, because when you look at Bassey, he jumped more than anyone else,” Khune said on SABC.
