10-year-old boy dies after altercation with other children in Niger

A tragic incident has occurred in Karaku community, Rafi Local Government Area of Niger State, where a 10-year-old, Abubakar Lawal, lost his life following a fight with other children.

It was gathered the altercation happened on August 11, 2025, while Abubakar and his friend, nine-year-old Hassan Adamu Umar, were returning home from grazing their parents’ sheep.

According to reports, the boys were allegedly blocked by four other minors: Musa Aliyu, 10; Umaru Abdullahi, 6; Maryam Abdullahi, 10; and Fulaira Jika, 4.

It was learnt that during the confrontation, one of the minors, Musa Aliyu, was said to have hit Abubakar and Hassan with a stick, leading to severe injuries.

The victims were rushed to the General Hospital in Kagara, where Abubakar was pronounced dead, and Hassan is receiving treatment.

Confirming the incident, the Niger State Police Command, through the Public Relations Officer, SP Wasiu Abiodun, described it as suspected culpable homicide.

The police spokesperson, in a statement, noted that the minors involved have been brought in for questioning alongside their parents.

According to him, “On August 12, 2025, at about 7:30 a.m., a report was received that, on August 11, 2025, at about 5:30 p.m., two children named Abubakar Lawal, 10 yrs, and Hassan Adamu, 9 yrs, were returning home from animal grazing along Karaku forest.

“The report further indicated that some minors, Musa Aliyu, 10 yrs; Umaru Abdullahi, 6 years; Maryam Abdullahi, 10 years; and Fulaira Jika, 4 years, blocked and engaged Hassan and Abubakar in a fight.”

“In the course of the fight, Musa Aliyu allegedly hit Hassan and Abubakar with a stick. The two victims sustained serious injuries and they were rushed to General Hospital Kagara for medical attention, but unfortunately, Abubakar was later confirmed dead while Hassan is still receiving treatment,” he further disclosed.

The police spokesperson, in a statement, noted that the minors involved have been brought in for questioning alongside their parents.

“Further investigation is in progress, and the juvenile offenders are under questioning in the presence of their parents, who brought them to the police station on August 14, 2025.”

He further stated that the unfortunate incident will soon be transferred to SCID Minna for further action.

The body of the deceased has been deposited at the hospital’s morgue for autopsy.
