10 Killed In Sweden School Shooting
A shooting at the Risbergska School for Adults in Örebro on Tuesday has left 10 people dead, Swedish authorities have confirmed.
The victims were found dead inside the school building after an unidentified gunman entered the premises and opened fire, according to local police chief Roberto Eid Forest.
Initial investigations suggest the suspect, believed to have acted alone, is among the deceased.
Authorities have ruled out any indications of a terror-related motive, noting that they were yet to identify the attacker who left no prior warning signs.
“This is a horrible incident and a nightmare,” Forest said during a press briefing.
“Our focus now is on the investigation and ensuring the safety and security of the community,” he added.
When asked about the weapon used in the attack, Forest confirmed it was a firearm but declined to provide additional details. He also could not confirm whether the suspect died by suicide.
At least six people were hospitalized following the shooting. Five of them sustained gunshot wounds, with four undergoing surgery, while the sixth victim suffered minor injuries.
The local hospital—Örebro University Hospital has increased its capacity to accommodate additional patients if necessary, BBC reported.
Maria Pegado, a teacher at Risbergska, described the terrifying moment, saying she and her students fled for their lives.
“I opened the door to my classroom right after lunch and shouted for everyone to run,” Pegado told Reuters.
“I had 15 students with me. As we were running down the hallway, I heard two gunshots. We were close to the entrance, and thankfully, we made it out.
“I saw people dragging injured victims—one after another. That’s when I realized how serious it was,” she explained.
Authorities have assured the public that the situation is under control, and they do not expect any further attacks.
According to Forest, investigation is ongoing, with the police working alongside other Swedish security services to gather more information about the suspect and the circumstances behind the shooting.
