Jurgen Klopp revealed why he turned down Manchester United before joining Liverpool in 2015.
Klopp was considered for the manager’s position at Manchester United following his exit from Borussia Dortmund in 2015.
The German was one of Europe’s most-coveted coaches, having led Dortmund to two Bundesliga titles and the 2013 Champions League final.
Klopp has revealed that he held talks with Manchester United but said he disagreed with the strategy of the project. He instead joined Liverpool in October 2015, who he guided to the club’s most successful period of the 21st century.
During his time at Anfield, Klopp won seven trophies, including the 2019 Champions League and the club’s first league title in 30 years a season later.
Discussing why he turned down Manchester United, Klopp told Steven Bartlett on The Diary of a CEO podcast: “Because I was told things in the meetings that I didn’t like: ‘We get all the players you want… we get him, and him, and him..’ And I was sitting there like… yeah, this is not my type of project.
“I didn’t want to bring back Paul Pogba. These things won’t work. I didn’t want to bring back Cristiano Ronaldo, this won’t help.
“Their idea was to bring the best players to the club, but they would never bring up football. And then a pure football project came along: Liverpool FC.”
