MI Abaga taught me how to rap – Ice Prince

Nigerian rapper Ice Prince has credited MI Abaga for teaching him how to rap, describing him as his mentor.

Ice Prince made this revelation during his appearance on a recent episode of content creator Isbaeu’s Curiosity Made Me Ask.

The rapper described MI as a ‘big brother’ who shaped his career and equipped him with the knowledge and discipline needed to excel in the industry.

Ice Prince attributed his lyrical prowess to years of training under MI’s guidance. He explained that the foundation given to him by MI makes it impossible for him to deliver “wack” verses.

He said: “I can rap on any beat, with anybody, any rapper and I will stand out. I’m not going to have a wack verse on a song.

“I’m not saying other rappers cannot rap or do their thing but it can’t be said that I’m wack. I was brought up by the best, shout out to MI Abaga.

“I rapped with MI for years. That’s my big brother, he taught me how to do this and he taught me well”.

Ice Prince rose to fame in 2011 with the release of Oleku, a hit track from his debut album. He followed that up with monster hits like Superstar, cementing his place as one of the finest rappers in the country.

In December 2024, Ice Prince talked about his struggles growing up, revealing that he missed out on a University education because he couldn’t raise N20,000.

In the interview on Listen with Osi, Ice Prince said “I was the guy who would spend at least 3 weeks out of every school term at home because of school fees.

“I didn’t go to university because of 20,000 which is like one spliff now. That’s the reason I didn’t go, because of 20,000. I had two weeks to pay that money for a registration and I couldn’t come up with it and that’s how I lost the admission and I became a studio rat from there.”
