D’banj shared the reason behind’s Don Jazzy’s mysterious personality
In a new interview on The Afrobeats Podcast with Adesope, Nigerian music legend D’banj shared why they had to come up with a mysterious branding for Don Jazzy.
He said the goal was to make Mo’hit Records co-founder and legendary music producer Don Jazzy a feared and respected figure in the music industry.
He shared that the branding was motivated by a desire to gain respect from an industry that had failed to view them through the lens of musicians because they were actively running the label as executives.
“After an award in 2006, they didn’t nominate Mo’Hits, and we had great success that year. Jazzy and I spoke, and we figured out that it’s because we were the only executives that was active (being musicians)”.
“We decided that we had to do something so the industry will fear and respect Don Jazzy,” D’banj said on how he decided to lead the musical front while Don Jazzy transitioned mainly into an executive role, further amplified by his quiet personality.
Don Jazzy’s branding would make him a force to be reckoned with in Nigerian music. He spoke sparingly and carried himself with the grace of a business mogul.
Their partnership would create one of the most formidable duos in Nigerian music. D’banj would dominate the mainstream with his collection of Don Jazzy-produced hit singles.
Although the duo would later part ways, they maintained a close friendship, and their impact on Nigerian music continued to endure.
D’banj recently performed at the Rema‘s O2 Arena concert, where the Grammy-nominated star praised him for massively contributing to Afrobeats’ global exportation.
