Andrews reacts to controversial Wolves goal against Brentford

Keith Andrews, Manager of Brentford, applauds the fans after the Premier League match between Brentford and Wolverhampton Wanderers at Gtech Community Stadium on March 16, 2026 in Brentford, England.

Keith Andrews believes Wolves’ opening goal against Brentford should have been disallowed due to a back pass shortly before it was scored.

Adam Armstrong pulled one back for the visitors at the Gtech Community Stadium after the Bees took a two-goal lead in the first half.

Michael Kayode opened the scoring with a header before Dango Ouattara set up Igor Thiago for his 19th Premier League goal this season. But Wolves equalised late in the second half through impact sub Tolu Arokodare.

Brentford, who have now drawn three games in a row, missed the chance to go within a point of Chelsea and the top six.

“We are disappointed, but equally we need to understand why, I suppose,” Andrews told BBC Match of the Day after the full-time whistle.

“We created some opportunities and I felt like we could’ve had more if we had been a little more clinical and our decision-making a bit sharper. Second half I wanted us to be front-foot, and we couldn’t get control of the game in the second half like in the first. We didn’t do the basics as well and ultimately, we’re frustrated with that.”

Half a minute before Armstrong’s phenomenal finish, Ladislav Krejci passed the ball back to goalkeeper Jose Sa who then picked it up and rolled it out to Santiago Bueno to start the attack that led to the goal. Ouattara got a glancing touch on the ball when he challenged Krejci on the edge of the box.

The PGMOL have said they could not intervene as the incident was not in the same attacking phase; the ball was briefly lost before Jean-Ricner Bellegarde’s interception and subsequent assist.

“I think there is enough officials in and around the pitch to identify whether it is a back pass or not,” Andrews said. “The fact I’m getting asked about it in every interview would suggest that most people would think it was a back pass.”

He added: “I’m not making an excuse at all, I’m giving my comment on the incident which made it 2-1 and a very different game going into half-time.”
