Jafar Jafar: Police respond to concerns over invitation of journalist
The Nigeria Police Force, Zone One Headquarters in Kano, says it has taken note of concerns raised by civil society groups and stakeholders regarding the invitation sent to Daily Nigeria editor-in-chief, Jafar Jafar, and publisher, Audu Umar.
In a statement signed by CSP Bashir Muhammad, spokesperson for the zone, the police assured the public that their investigation will be fair, professional, and without bias.
According to the statement, the police were acting on an order from Chief Magistrate Court No. 15, Normans Land Complex, Kano.
The court directed the police to investigate complaints of criminal conspiracy, defamation, and attempt to incite public disturbance against the two media executives under section 106(4) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Law (ACJL) 2019.
The Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of Zone One then ordered a discreet investigation. This led to the invitation for questioning sent to Jafar Jafar and Audu Umar.
The police highlighted that the court order clearly stated that the suspects must not be detained until the case is concluded.
The Zone One Headquarters stressed its commitment to professionalism, justice, and integrity in handling the matter. It also acknowledged the importance of free speech and an independent press in a democratic society.
“The Nigeria Police Force, Zone One Headquarters, Kano, remains committed to serving the public with utmost dedication and professionalism. We will continue to uphold the law and protect the rights of all citizens, while ensuring that justice is served in all matters that come before us.”
The police assured that the rights of journalists and citizens will not be violated during the process. The statement urged the public to allow the investigation to run its course and avoid comments that could affect its outcome.
It also called on civil society groups, the media, and other stakeholders to cooperate with the police. The Zone One Command reiterated that its duty is to uphold the law, protect the rights of all citizens, and ensure justice in every case.
