‘Leadership Not About Snatching Ballot Boxes, Thuggery’ – Obi Reaffirms One-Term Bid

Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has reaffirmed his commitment to serve only one term of four years if elected president, insisting that leadership is about service, not desperation, thuggery, or electoral malpractice.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, Obi said he remained baffled by the “agitation” that has trailed his vow to complete only a single term, noting that a sincere and focused leader can drive meaningful change within 48 months.

“I still find it baffling that my decision to do a term of four years, if given the mandate to rule this country, is generating so much agitation. By this feeling, we are doubting the fact that a sincere leader can achieve much in 48 months,” he said.

The former Anambra State governor explained that he has never been driven by personal ambition or desperation for power, citing his political history as proof.

“I have never been desperate in the pursuit of power, or anything else, for that matter,” he stated.

“There are some traits associated with desperation which are in no way part of my political behaviour—like engaging in overly aggressive rhetoric, making unfulfillable promises, or resorting to character assassination.”

Obi emphasized that he has never been associated with electoral violence, rigging, or ballot box snatching, which continue to plague Nigeria’s democratic process.

“Throughout my political journey, I have never been involved in thuggery, the snatching of ballot boxes, or any form of electoral malpractice.

“I challenge anyone—conduct your investigations. You will find no stains of rigging or violence associated with my name.”

He further challenged the political class to reflect on the essence of leadership, warning against entitlement and manipulation.

“Leadership, to me, is not about entitlement. It is about service. If given the mandate for just one term, I will dedicate every moment to building a Nigeria that works for all.”

The former governor also used the opportunity to highlight what could be achieved in a four-year presidency if priorities are properly aligned, pointing to recent controversial government spending.

“In four years, we can confront corruption head-on, redirecting resources to priority areas. The trillions used to acquire new presidential jets and other unnecessary expenses at this time could have been channelled into education, healthcare, or infrastructure,” he noted.

Obi pledged to uphold the rule of law and ensure electoral integrity, should he be entrusted with national leadership.

“Within the same period, we can ensure that the rule of law is strictly followed and conduct free, fair, and credible elections,” he said.
