Police, Ondo varsity vow to rescue kidnapped institution’s official, confirm release of one
The Ondo State Police Command has disclosed that its operatives and detectives have swung into action toward ensuring that a member of staff of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, AAUA, Omoniyi Eleyinmi, who was kidnapped, is rescued.
While disclosing this to DAILY POST on Tuesday, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Olayinka Ayanlade, revealed that one of the victims had been rescued, while the kidnappers are being trailed in a bid to rescue the remaining victim.
Gunmen had on Monday evening kidnapped Omoniyi and one other person while en route to his house in Supare Akoko from Akungba.
According to the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, SSANU, the gunmen had laid ambush for him at his residence, after which they shot sporadically into the air before taking him away.
Ayanlade, who stressed that vital information over the incident will not be released to the public due to its sensitivity, assured that updates will be given at the appropriate time.
“They (victims) were on the bike when they were accosted at Supare. They took them away, but we were able to rescue one of the victims, and we are currently debriefing him. We have deployed the necessary assets to rescue the remaining victim.”
Meanwhile, the authority of AAUA has stated that the institution is in touch with the police toward rescuing the victim.
The university’s Public Relations Officer, Victor Akinpelumi, said, “We have contacted the police, and they assured us that they have swung into action.”
Meanwhile, a family source stated that the kidnappers were yet to make contact with the family, stressing that the family is already in distress over the development.
