The Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi and the Director-General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Prof. Moji Adeyeye, have inaugurated a joint implementation committee on drug regulation enforcement.

Customs and NAFDAC had signed an agreement on November 14, 2024, during the CGC’s annual conference to strengthen regulatory collaboration to combat the trafficking of illicit, substandard, and harmful pharmaceutical products into Nigeria.

Adeniyi said, “Every time we meet, your position has always been for us to come together and deepen collaboration.

“This implementation committee will drive our shared vision”.

He stated that the committee’s terms of reference had been outlined to guide joint planning, training, standardisation, communication, monitoring, and issue resolution.

He said the committee would produce measurable results for public health and security while noting that the MoU remains binding under Nigerian law.

NAFDAC’s DG assured of the agency’s commitment to implementing the agreement towards safeguarding public health.

She emphasised that working with Customs was central to eliminating counterfeit, fake, and harmful products across Nigerian markets and borders.

“The committee’s inauguration serves as a strong shift from dialogue to action that will strengthen national controls, improve operational synergy” she said.

The Legal Adviser to Customs, Smart Akande, and NAFDAC’s Olakunle Olaniran attended the meeting, affirming institutional support for the committee’s implementation framework.

The committee includes members from both agencies and is chaired by Olakunle Olaniran, with Smart Akande serving as Deputy Chairman.
