Tiv, Fulani Leaders Sign Peace Pact in Taraba

Tiv and Fulani stakeholders in Gassol Local Government Area (LGA) of Taraba State have signed a peace pact pledging to “end communal hostilities, promote dialogue, and support security efforts to foster peaceful coexistence”.

The Commander of 6 Brigade Nigerian Army and Sector 3 Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS), Brigadier General Kingsley Chidiebere Uwa, convened the peace dialogue at the 6 Brigade Headquarters in Jalingo as part of ongoing efforts to resolve inter-communal tensions.

General Uwa initiated the meeting following recurring clashes and unresolved disputes between the two ethnic groups.

The move comes barely two weeks after a massacre resulting in over 200 casualties was recorded in Yelwata, Benue state.

In a bid to avert further violence, General Uwa invited the Chairman of Gassol LGA, Hon. Abubakar Usman, traditional rulers, community elders, and other key stakeholders to deliberate on a sustainable framework for peace.

In his address, Uwa strongly condemned the cycle of violence and urged communities to refrain from taking the law into their own hands.

He emphasised that “no individual or group has the constitutional mandate to enforce justice outside the bounds of the law.”

He called on all stakeholders to serve as ambassadors of peace and agents of development, noting that true “security, prosperity, and growth can only be attained in a united and respectful society”.

“The parties involved resolved to embrace peace, promote regular dialogue, and desist from shielding criminal elements within their communities,” he stated.

Speaking on behalf of the communities, Hon. Usman commended the troops under the 6 Brigade, for their tireless efforts in maintaining stability in the area.

The meeting concluded with the formal signing of the peace accord by all parties, who pledged to abide by the resolutions and work closely with relevant authorities for full implementation.

Stakeholders also agreed to share timely intelligence with security agencies and collaborate to prevent any resurgence of violence.
