Residents of Chikaji community in the Sabongari Local Government Area of Kaduna State have sought government action following a devastating flood on Monday.

The flood, which started in the early hours and lasted until afternoon, affected over 200 houses and left many graves exposed.

Alhaji Auwal Sani-Danbaba, the village head of Chikaji revealed this on Tuesday during a chat with the newsmen.

He noted that the most affected areas stretch along the water canal from Yan-awaki by Kano roundabout through Chikaji down to Shika Dam in Sabon Gari.

According to Sani-Danbaba, the Local Education Authority (LEA) Primary School and parts of the Hayin Ojo Cemetery were damaged.

“It also washed away parts of the LEA Primary School and a substantial part of the Hayin Ojo Cemetery.

“Presently, many graves were left open; while some victims of the flood are sheltered in the neighborhood.

“But so far, there was no loss of life during the incident,” the village head said, adding that despite the extent of the damage, no life was lost.

Sani-Danbaba expressed concern that there has been no assistance from the government or any relevant agencies.

He called for government intervention in disaster management and control to prevent further damage and provide relief to the affected residents.

On his part, Suleiman Liman, the Chief Imam of Chikaji Central Mosque, while commenting on the situation, revealed that the community had convened an emergency meeting with wealthy people in the area.

The meeting according to him aimed to address the challenges at the cemetery and consider ways to assist the flood victims.

One of the affected victims of the flood while recounting the harrowing experience said, “While we were evacuating water from the house, a section collapsed, and we could not save anything. My main concern was to protect the children from the rubble.”
