A 40-year-old businessman, Ayodele Mac Davis, had been arraigned before a Lagos Magistrate’s Court for allegedly conniving with a lady to obtain the sum of N6.9m from a visa seeker under false pretence.

Davis, who was arrested by operatives from the Adeniji Adele police division in Lagos, is said to have committed the crime with one Beatrice Evbuomman, a native of Benin City, Edo State, who is now on the run.

They allegedly defrauded the complainant, Habeeb Isaq, promising to use the money to procure a Canadian visa for him to travel abroad.

The police said the defendants failed to fulfil the promise of getting him a visa and fled with the money.

According to the police, they arrested Davis at a hideout in Lagos, while his accomplice, Evbuomman managed to escape to Togo, Benin Republic.

After investigation, the police charged Davis to court on four-count bordering on obtaining money by false pretence, stealing, aiding and abetting Evbuomman to escape.

Police counsel, Ben Ekundayo, informed the court in the charge marked TA/4/2024 that the defendant committed the offence on 23 March 2024 at 5, Odunfa Street, Lagos Island, Lagos.

Ekundayo said the defendant connived with the fleeing accomplice, Evbuomman, who happened to be the mastermind in defrauding the complainant of the N6.9m.

He said the defendant’s offences were punishable under sections 411,314,287 and 107(1)(2) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

Davis pleaded not guilty to the charges and Magistrate, M.A Owunmi granted him N2m bail with two sureties in like sum and subsequently adjourned the case till 27 August, 2024, for the commencement of trial.
