Polygon’s Discord hacked amid upcoming token upgrade
Polygon, a prominent blockchain platform, has reported a security breach involving its community Discord channel.
Mudit Gupta, Polygon’s Chief Information Security Officer, asserted the hack and advised users to avoid clicking on any links shared in the channel until the situation is resolved.
The breach has raised alarms about the effectiveness of security measures, despite all privileged accounts having two-factor authentication (2FA) enabled.
Discord, a favoured platform for crypto communities, has increasingly become a target for cybercriminals due to the sensitive nature of the discussions and transactions taking place.
The impact on Polygon’s community has been significant.
Users have been misled by scammers posing as support agents, with one user, ValidatorK, reporting a $150,000 loss in Ether after interacting with what appeared to be an official announcement.
Other users have been inundated with misleading links and fraudulent support messages.
This incident is part of a troubling trend. Recently, similar attacks have targeted other platforms, including a phishing scam on Arbitrum’s Discord and a $1.27 million loss at Gnus. AI.
The timing of the breach is particularly critical for Polygon, which is preparing for a major network upgrade. Scheduled for September 4, the upgrade will replace its native MATIC token with POL tokens to enhance the platform’s capabilities.
