Iran’s Largest Steel Plants Shut Down
Iran’s two biggest steel producers have been forced out of action by repeated waves of U.S and Israeli airstrikes, according to statements from the companies themselves.
Khuzestan Steel Company said damage to its facilities in Ahvaz is severe. Mehran Pakbin, deputy head of operations, was quoted by Mizan Online as saying: “Our initial estimate is that restarting these units will take at least six months and up to one year.”
He added that “all modules and steelmaking furnaces of this industrial complex have been damaged.”
Mobarakeh Steel Company, located in the central province of Isfahan and one of the largest steel complexes in the Middle East, stated that its “production lines have completely shut down following the high volume of attacks.” The company said late Wednesday that “continuation of operations is not possible” after the latest strikes.
Both plants have faced multiple attacks since late March. Iranian media reported fresh strikes as recently as Tuesday evening on Mobarakeh Steel and its subsidiary Sefid Dasht Steel, causing significant damage to production units, power infrastructure, and storage facilities.
Steel is a strategically vital material for Iran, used in industrial manufacturing as well as military production of missiles, drones, and ships. The disruption is expected to reduce the country’s overall steel output and export capacity at a critical time.
In retaliation for the strikes on its industrial sites, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps has launched missile and drone attacks on targets across the region, including industrial areas in Gulf states and sites in Israel. The Guards have warned of further retaliation if such attacks continue.
The broader conflict intensified dramatically on February 28, 2026, when US and Israeli strikes killed Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
That event triggered a wider war that has since spread across the Middle East, with repeated exchanges targeting military, nuclear, and now key economic infrastructure on both sides.
